Katherine and its surrounds are where the tropics meet the outback. Just a few hours south out of Darwin on the lands of the Jawoyn people, you’ll find a region rich in natural beauty, culture and history. 


Katherine is magical in the wet season and equally as spectacular in the dry. In the wet you’ll see the region come to life, with panoramas of vibrant green bushland and overflowing water holes. The dry will bring you cool, sunny days perfect for swimming and exploring.

Top things to do in Katherine and surrounds

Trek the Jatbula trail, a 5 or 6 day hike where you’ll get to discover Nitmiluk National Park and its most hidden swimming spots

Take a cruise along Nitmiluk Gorge

Go on a thrill seeking mountain bike journey along some of the Territory’s newest trails in Nitmiluk National Park

  • Local tip!

    The Black Russian Caravan Bar is a great spot to grab a coffee and a bite to eat in Katherine. The quirky café serves toasties, waffles and drinks out of a retro Caravan in the heart of town.


    Pop Rocket Café and The Finch Café are also popular spots.

  • What not to miss?

    Katherine and the surrounding area have some of the Top End’s best swimming spots.


     Make sure you explore the top pools at Leliyn (Edith Falls) and also check out Mataranka and Bitter Springs just south of Katherine.
