Your Guide to Fishing in Darwin and the Top End

The Northern Territory is one of the best fishing destinations in Australia.

From barramundi stacked in tidal rivers during dry season to offshore bluewater runs and remote helifishing locations that barely see a line cast, the Top End delivers a fishing experience that is hard to match anywhere in the country. Travel Gateway connects anglers with local guides, curated packages, and the insider knowledge that turns a good fishing trip into a great one. Here is what you need to know before you go.

Why Dry Season Is the Best Time to Fish the Top End

May through October is dry season in the Northern Territory — and for anglers, it is the window that matters most. As the wet season rains stop and floodwaters recede, fish concentrate into the rivers, gorges, billabongs, and tidal estuaries around Darwin. Less water means more fish in fewer, more findable places. Local guides know exactly where to put you. The dry season also brings stable weather, calm seas, and comfortable temperatures — conditions that make full-day charters genuinely enjoyable rather than something to push through. If you are planning a fishing trip to the NT, May to September is the season to target.

Types of Fishing in Darwin and the Top End

Barramundi Fishing

Barramundi — barra — is the fish the Top End is built around.

Powerful, fast, and known for jumping clean out of the water when hooked, barra are one of Australia's most sought-after sport fish. The Top End holds the largest barramundi population in Australia, and the dry season is prime time as fish stack up in the gorges, creek mouths, and tidal systems around Darwin.

Charters depart from Dinah Beach Boat Ramp and run full days on the water with local guides from Offshore Boats — experienced crews who know the tides, the systems, and where the fish are feeding.

Worth noting: the NT runs the Million Dollar Fish competition from October through May — 101 tagged barramundi released into Territory waterways, one worth $1 million.

Bluewater and reef fishing

Head offshore and the fishing changes entirely. Darwin's bluewater produces queenfish, giant trevally, golden trevally, golden snapper, and black jewfish — some of the best pelagic and reef fishing in Australia.

March and April sit in a sweet spot between seasons when the water is calm and both sport and reef fish are highly active. Bluewater options remain strong well into the dry season for those chasing offshore species.

Mudcrabbing

Mud crabbing is one of the Top End's most underrated experiences. Crabs are found in the creek systems and coastal flats around Darwin, and dry season from May to October is peak crabbing time.

An incoming tide gives you the best window, and fish pieces are the bait that works. It is a different pace to rod fishing and a natural fit for a full-day trip that includes multiple types of fishing.

Inland fishing

The Top End's inland river systems offer a productive day within a couple of hours of Darwin.

The Mary River, Adelaide River, and the fishing systems inside Kakadu National Park all hold barra, sooty grunter, and golden snapper depending on the season. Kakadu adds a landscape that no coastal ramp can match.

Helifishing tours

For anglers who want to go further, helifishing puts you into remote Top End systems that no road can reach — pristine water that sees almost no fishing pressure.

The landscapes from the air are extraordinary. The fishing when you land is on another level. If you are building a bucket-list trip to the NT, helifishing belongs on it.

Most people have never heard of Bremer Island. Sitting 650km east of Darwin in East Arnhem Land, Bremer Island, is one of the most remote and untouched places in Australia. No roads in. A maximum of eight guests at a time. Just white sand beaches, turquoise water, and a coastline shared with four species of nesting sea turtles.

Most people drive straight through Tennant Creek without stopping. Halfway between Darwin and Alice Springs on the Stuart Highway, it's easy to treat it as a fuel stop and keep moving. That's a mistake — and locals will tell you so. The Barkly region, centred on Tennant Creek, is one of the Northern Territory's most genuinely surprising destinations. Ancient sacred landscapes, a gold rush history that shaped an entire town, world-class stargazing, and a living Aboriginal culture that goes back tens of thousands of years. Travel Gateway is here to make sure you don't miss it.

If there’s one dish that defines Darwin, it’s laksa. Steaming bowls of spicy, coconut-based broth filled with noodles, seafood or chicken, and topped with fresh herbs have become a staple of the Top End lifestyle. Locals don’t just eat laksa for lunch or dinner — they eat it for breakfast, too. In fact, Darwin has proudly claimed the title of Australia’s Laksa Capital, and every October the city celebrates with the Darwin International Laksa Festival . This year, Travel Gateway is making it even easier to join the fun with the Ministry of Laksa Package — the ultimate way to taste, sip, and explore Darwin.
